My son and I had a great day on this property. It’s a beautiful location with awesome views of the mountain range. The first day we fished with Mattias Holverson with Flyfishers place. He was excellent!! If you’re targeting Bull trout, he’s the best there is. We both caught multiple large fish. Our second day we fished on our own and had good action on Rainbows and Mountain Whitefish. I would highly recommend this property and look forward to returning.

The House on the Metolius is a special kind of vibe - a land of mythical fish living in a spring fed river running through a magical Meadow surrounded by old growth forests. This special kind of vibe is a place that needs to be preserved & respected. As guests through Rare Waters, it is imperative that we act as the environmental stewards we are. For we are only visitors here & shall act with utmost respect & honor. Here sits a Zen garden under the dramatic & towering Mt. Jefferson volcano, where I was as drawn to meditation as much I was to angling. This tranquil & serene feel will resonate with anglers & non-anglers alike. Making this the perfect Rare Waters locale to bring your partner, or maybe your mother! There are cabins available on property (golf carts abound for cabin guests make for rad wheels at this joint) as well as 10+ campgrounds nearby (Gorge Campground being the closest & easily walkable). This is truly the Shangri-La for BIG Bull angling. The property sits in a breathtaking meadow where the wide water is relatively shallow, running knee to waste deep. This meadow is sandwiched between the upper & lower canyons where you will find faster/deeper bends & riffles towards each boundary. The resident & migratory Bulls encountered here are some of the largest I have ever seen. Dressed in full spawning regalia, not only were these beauties large, they were also exquisitely colorful. Being mid-August, the Bulls were just starting to stage for the spawn in nearby Lower Canyon Creek (just down river) as well as on property up Jack Creek (closed to angling ALL YEAR to protect this most important head water). During this delicate time I intuitively knew the importance to tread lightly & not harass these dinosaurs. On this trip I had the opportunity to enjoy some time on the water with local guide and Bull expert, Mattias Holverson, where he shared with me his sage wisdom on how to angle for these massive fish while respecting their delicacy during this most important full spawn period (mid August-early October). Mattias stressed how important it is to not pressure the Bulls with too many anglers targeting them during this time. All anglers must practice awareness, especially in the meadow, & stay off of reds as the spawn will spill out of Jack Creek & into the meadow come peak season in early September. This means: NO dredging with heavy rigs at this time ~ NO stomping through the meadow & on these most precious eggs ~ What this really means is educating each & every angler who visits so we can have a sustainable fishery for the future generations ~ Most important, is the value of speaking up & educating other anglers in a way that shows respect & inspires other anglers to be better stewards. After nearly 10 days on the Metolius, 7 of those through public access, I can confidently say: this is where you will find the biggest Bulls & get your shot at a true trophy. What’s most important is that it’s up to us to do our very best & help educate others so this fishery will stay intact & continue to thrive! I recommend hiring Mattias for at least your first day here so you can cue in on how best to hunt for, hook & land these truly MASSIVE Bulls in a respectful manner focused on sustainability of the fishery. Thank you Rare Waters team and the folks at The House on the Metolius for hosting me! Forever grateful
