Brown Trout, Rainbow TroutLocated approximately 45 minutes from downtown Gunnison, this family-owned cattle ranch offers 2 miles of secluded access to Cochetopa Creek, an intimate and scenic fly fishing experience. Access to the creek is straightforward and manageable for most guests. While some walking is required, the terrain is open and relatively flat. During irrigation season (typically May 1st to August 1st), expect tall, knee-high grasses and boggy ground in some areas. After August, the fields are mowed and walking conditions improve significantly. Barbed wire fences must be crossed at designated access points, so anglers should be cautious and respectful when navigating between sections.
Cochetopa Creek is a classic small-stream brown trout fishery and a favorite for light tackle anglers. This stretch fishes well with a 3-weight rod, offering excellent action for feisty 10–16" browns, with the possibility of larger fish holding in deeper pools. The creek winds through meadows and irrigated pastureland, creating a mix of slow glides, riffles, and undercut banks ideal for dry fly and nymph fishing. Water clarity is typically good, and flows around 25 CFS are ideal for wade fishing.
This is a quiet and productive section of water and is perfect for anglers seeking solitude, a challenge on light gear, and a chance to connect with Colorado’s lesser-known trout streams.
