Brown Trout, Rainbow TroutExplore 2.8 miles of the North Fork of the North Platte River near Walden, Colorado. This picturesque high-basin stream, located just three hours from Denver, provides anglers with both scenic beauty and easy access for a memorable fishing experience. This is the upstream beat of the two properties outside of Walden, CO. Parking is convenient and close to the river, followed by a gentle 100-foot slope down to the water. As the river flows through a series of island-like hayfields, it splits into two distinct channels, offering numerous bends, cutbanks, riffles, runs, and deep pools that range from 3 to 6 feet deep, depending on the season. The willows lining the banks provide some shade but won't get in the way of your casting. The streambed, made up of stones between 2 and 6 inches, is easy to navigate, though anglers should note a few 1- to 2-foot steps along the riverbanks. Here, you'll primarily be targeting Brown and Rainbow Trout. To handle the variety of fish, including some potential hidden giants, we recommend using a 3- to 6-weight rod, between 7'6" and 9' in length. Things to keep in mind: Follow Hoot Owl guidelines during the warmer months (late July and August). Be off the water by noon or when the water temps hit 68°F to protect the fishery and the landowner's peace of mind. Watch out for moose—both cow and bull moose are frequently spotted on the property. Yield to all agricultural equipment and workers. This is an active cattle ranch, with about 50 head of cattle roaming, depending on the time of year. Drive slowly—speed limits are set at 15 mph on the property. Parking is easy, as the road is flat and accessible for anglers. Fishing Details: Target Species: Brown and Rainbow Trout. Recommended Flies: Dry flies like Elk Hair Caddis and Parachute Adams, along with nymphs such as Prince Nymphs and Pheasant Tails, and micro streamers. Water Depth: Ranges from ankle-deep to 6 feet, depending on the season. When to Fish: Spring (April to June): This is prime time, with higher water levels from snowmelt and actively feeding fish. Spring hatches of insects like mayflies and caddisflies provide productive fishing opportunities. Summer (July to August): Best fished during the cooler parts of the day, especially in the early morning or late evening. Follow Hoot Owl regulations during this season to protect the fishery. Fall (September to October): Fall is a great time, as fish are feeding actively before winter, and cooler temps mean less fishing pressure. Winter (November to March): Winter fishing is possible but challenging, with colder temps and lower water levels. The river can freeze over in the coldest months. The best fishing times are early mornings or late evenings when fish are most active. Always check local conditions and regulations before you go. Although we typically get your booking approved within a few hours, please allow up to 1 business day for booking confirmations.
