If you’re an angler looking for a challenge and a chance to catch a trophy fish, the Clark Fork River Headwaters property in Montana might just be what you’re looking for. This property boasts 1.75 miles of river frontage and is located 100 miles from Missoula, making it a remote and secluded spot to fish. The property is also conveniently located only 1 mile below the Dam, making it the farthest up the river you can get.
While the headwaters of the Clark Fork River may not produce large numbers of fish per mile, the quality of the fish more than makes up for it. The brown trout in this stretch of river can exceed 2ft, and anglers can also expect to find Rainbows, Westslope Cutthroat, the occasional Bull trout, Whitefish, Longnose suckers, and possibly Pikeminnow. The river is smaller than downstream, at around 10 yards wide. Anglers should target larger and deeper holes with oxygenated water, such as riffles that lead into deep pools. Small nymphs in the #18-#20 range, as well as midges, baetis, and mayfly patterns, are safe bets all year round. Hatches of grasshoppers, craneflies, drakes, stoneflies, and caddis occur throughout the year, with good streamer fishing on cloudy days in the spring and fall. Fishing on this property can be a bit more challenging than others, but the quality and size of the fish in some holes make it worth the effort.
Access to the river is easy for all anglers, with vehicle access along both sides of the river. The property offers easy casting and open grasslands, making it an inviting spot to fish. However, it’s important to note that moose have been sighted in the area, and there is an elk fence around the river to protect it. There is a bull paddock on the property, but they do not have access to the water. Dogs are not allowed to chase livestock.
Overall, the Clark Fork River Headwaters property offers a secluded and challenging fishing experience, with the right approach and some patience, anglers can enjoy the beauty of this remote property while trying to catch that elusive trophy fish.
